Melitta Bentz who has original name Amalie Auguste Melitta Liebscher was German inventor. She was known as inventor of coffee filter. In 1908, she applied patent for her invention and built company to produce it. Several improvements were made in order to be more efficient, including new paper type.
She was actually housewife without engineer background. Her family lived in Dresden. Her invention came as the result of trial and error. She wanted tool that could make coffee without ground and leftover. After several experiments, she used paper from her son’s notebook.
Melitta Bentz was born on 31 January 1973 and died on June 29, 1950. She grew up in Dresden, Germany. She married to Hugo Bentz and continued to live in Dresden with her sons.
There was much known about her early life, school, and education background. She might learn and study at local school in Dresden before she married. Her husband was employee in German company.
She liked to brew coffee beans, but found difficulty to maintain their grounds. She needed to clean the bag filters. This condition led to the idea for developing filter without much stains and leftover. The filter was easy to attach and get rid of immediately.
With her son’s notebook, she was capable to overcome this issue. After she perfected her invention, the patent was received in 1908. She and family started to build company that focused on coffee filter. This company won medal at International Health Exhibition.
The company and business were growth faster where the factory in Dresden could not support. She tried to find the right location for moving and expanding business. Her workers were approximately 50, but it would be more after new factory was established.
Coffee filter became the main product in her company. However, World War II made difficult situation. Coffee beans in German were imported product. Due to the war, the company could not produce filter because of decreasing amount of coffee consumption.
In order to survive, the company produced cartoon for short period. However, the war was temporary, and the production started again after coffee beans were available on market. The company still provided more benefits and care for employees as the reward for their loyalty.
During World War II, the company was ceased because the factory produced goods and supports for the war. Employees were relocated to old factory. All productions were completely for war supply.
In 1930, the company name changed to Bentz & Sohn. Her shares were transferred because Horst took over her company. However, she still involved in business to ensure the employees received their benefits.
Melitta Bentz was known as the care employer. The company provided vacation, Christmas bonuses, and working only for 5 days per week. Besides, Bentz also created Melitta Aid for charity and philanthropy activity.
She was a part of German inventor who changed society and world with coffee filter. His invention might be simple, but it has significant affect to modern brewing. This is her legacy that people still remember today.
